Community Kids Robotics Team Succeeds in Competition

Every summer, FIRST (FOR INSPIRATION in SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY) LEGO league (FLL) releases a challenge that’s based on a real-world scientific problem. Each challenge consists of three parts: The robot game, the research project, and core values. Teams of 10-12 kids, with two adult coaches, compete in the challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (Robot game), innovate a solution to a problem they’ve identified (Project), while consistently demonstrating core values. Teams then attend an official tournament hosted by FIRST LEGO league partners. Teams compete and are judged and ranked in each category.

This year’s challenge is based on trash: TRASH TREK! Team Keystone, comprised of 12 students in grades 4-8, performed phenomenally at the tournament. So much so, that they were recognized with the Project Award, placed in the top 25% of teams in the Core Values category, and each received silver medals. Go team!

Their research problem was identified by interviewing those who deal with trash on a regular basis, custodial workers from five different sites including the West 7th Community Center. After the in person interviews, students analyzed the responses to identify any trends. Their analysis revealed that the hardest part in dealing with trash was lifting heavy loads of trash out of trash containers. Subsequently, students conducted further online research to determine whether there were any existing solutions. With no luck finding existing solutions, they were empowered to solve the problem by designing a pulley prototype made from all recycled materials. After careful demonstrations using their new innovative design, they summarized their process, findings, and conclusion on a poster for the project presentation. Out of 32 teams in the tournament, Team Keystone was selected by the judges to win the Project Award trophy!
